Syrian women´s evolution

For many years the situation of women in Syria, little by little, has been changing in compare to the rest of the Muslim world, where women can't reach the same rights of men. Therefore, the role of women in this kind of society is looking after children and being a housewife. This according to the most conservatives sites in the Muslim culture, although in the last few years, liberal thoughts have taken a lot of influence in women. they have started to be a very important element in the Syrian economy, especially in the work world.

"I divorce, I divorce, I divorce"

In the muslim culture women can't choose their husband because the parents are who decide about this, for this reason woman haven't got freedom in this aspect.

Although, in the parts which have a bigger wester influence they can marry in a free way in relation to the divorce. In the case of man, they only need to say three times the phrase "I divorce" and inmediately they stop being married, but in the case of women is totally different. They have got to go to a court in front of a judge to get the divorce, although if they get it. they lost their children and these are in charge of their father.

Syrian women's work world

The situation of women in Syria in compare to the rest of the Middle East is pretty possitive about women's work insertion. They are the 29% of the manpower in Syria, in the last years women have been capable of becoming owners of their own enterprises and many different organisations.
Although, many of them work as farmer and for the government earning low wages from this perspective women are in a total disadvantage for the lack of education, preparation, and experience to be in the same level to men.

Discrimination against women

According to the constitution of Syrian, all its citizens are in the same condition before the legal system. But in the practice, this is totally different, especially for women for the huge wave of chauvinism which rules in Syria.Women can't travel alone around Syria, and out of this they need an authorisation signed up by their husband or father to do it.
Although, in the last decades, this rules has been softening and women who are over 18 years old can travel by herself, and get passport without asking for permission. But, in matters as dignity of women they suffer mistreatment, violations, and abuses which are totally accepted in the Syrian society where men are who make the rules and women must follow the rules without discussing. Besides that, the justice system is totally discriminatory towards women,if a man hits or kills a woman for honour this is not punished by the judges or for community.

Conclusion

In this kind of society, women is under men's level, and many times are considered an object and take dignity away. Although, we are in the 21st century is very difficult to try to change the way of thinking about this culture, but little by little women have been capable of improving their situation in an outstanding way.

Therefore, not only Syrian women, but all women in the Middle East have got to follow a long way to reach, and get the same conditions to any Western,Eastern or Muslim person. It takes years, even centuries to change that mentality ,but it is not impossible.

  1. As they say in their conclusion is not impossible, but I think is really hard to do it, to change a culture's mentality. It's something that has come for years and throught their generations, that's why is a little bit hard to change a culture's oppinion of how they treat women. I really don't accept this kind of beliefs, but I do respect them because it's part of its culture, as we have one and they have to respect it.
I'd really like to see a future with no differences between genders, but I believe that always are going to exist gender differences, as economical and social classes, and so on, and for a culture is different and hard to just change it.

  2. There are many differences between women's and men's rights in this country. I think this will be very hard to change, but not impossible. The discrimination against women must finish. Hernán Olivares

  3. I'm totally desagree with this kind of living, It so obvious that women are use to this kind of life. They were born in this society and growning up with the rules of the country. For us is clearly shocking because we're not use to this treatment.

I hate the differents between men and women, because at the end we're human and we have to respect each other. But is true every culture had beliefs and differents ways of living their lifes. I just believe is so unfair for women that they're treat like the worse in the world, that they can't do anything they want it.
In the middle east is not allow to life fI mean they can't choose her own husband. unfortunely is going to take years even centuries to change this mentality, but not impossible.

  5. Men are so well living creatures there :) It's so easy for them to divorce, to get married. And woman is a slave for them, she just does what her husband tells her to do, nothing else. It's so surprising why women are still keepng it back?? Irina

  6. I think that this culture its very different for anyone of us because the most of people do not used to live that way, but everyone has many ways of living as this country and you wanted or not finally you will see it like something normal if you had to live overthere ,but it must be completely unpleasant having to ask about anything I want to do with my husband.

  7. I couldn't resist in this society, because their male chauvinist view is so ridiculus to me. Besides this I can't believe that someone can choose for you in your life as your love or husband. I hope these women can be happy in their lifes in this way.

  10. The same is repeated ..... all these Middle Eastern countries are extremists and take the woman as an object which may have!
Do not understand how a woman can not choose to marry? Obviously they do not believe in love, that has to go to a third or fourth level.

  11. I think it is really easy to give an opinion from here especially when we have a lot of rights that those women don't. Maybe if we were from a worse country in terms of women's rights we would envy these women. It depends from your culture. I do believe there are some things that are hard to believe as the divorce request for men. But maybe as they know what those words produce, they treat them carefully. I thought Syrian women had less rights.

  15. I think that is a old fashion and stupid thought of how to treat women. I can't understand how a person who says love someone, or care about somebody, is able to make feel bad, or force to do things even if a person doesn't want it. It is really amazing for me, how extremely religious countries base their society in God, in his volition or whatever, and avoid the "freewill" that everyone has. It is a big contradiction that is not aceptable for me. However, as the conclusion says, it is not impossible change their minds...It would be hard, but It could be possible.

  19. “I divorce, I divorce, I divorce”…

Just three simple words to break the marriage…simply this confirms that men are always on the top in relationship of women, you’re right when you say that it is very difficult to try to change the way of thinking about a culture. For us this is very strange but for them is a way of life, that have been maintained for centuries.
